The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) and OpenEvidence, the most popular AI for doctors in the United States, today announced a collaboration to make ASAM’s clinical guidelines, guidance, and implementation resources accessible through OpenEvidence. This integration enables OpenEvidence’s clinician users to readily access ASAM’s evidence-based guidance for the care of patients with substance use disorders (SUD) and addiction. ASAM’s guidance will surface automatically when clinically relevant, alongside peer-reviewed literature, with citations and a direct link back to the source.
Through this collaboration, clinicians can rapidly surface and review addiction medicine clinical guidelines and guidance from ASAM. In 2025, 44.6 million Americans had a substance use disorder in the past year, demonstrating an urgent need to continue expanding access to clinical resources that support evidence-based practices for the treatment and prevention of SUD as well as behavioral addictions.
“ASAM’s clinical practice guidelines aim to equip clinicians with high-quality, science-based guidance to support the care of patients with addiction and facilitate a path to long-term health and recovery,” said Stephen M. Taylor, MD, MPH, president of the American Society of Addiction Medicine. “Through this collaboration, we hope to make ASAM’s evidence-based treatment guidance more accessible to all healthcare professionals who may provide care for patients with addiction.”
“Addiction encompasses a wide range of conditions that clinicians encounter daily, yet too often, evidence-based guidance isn’t at hand when a treatment decision is being made,” said Isabel Ostrer, Director of Primary Care Initiatives. “ASAM sets the standard of care in addiction medicine. Bringing its guidelines directly to the point of care means every clinician, wherever they practice, can offer patients with substance use disorders care grounded in the best available evidence.”
