The free guide and calculator show production milling managers how fixture density and automated clamping recover the non-cutting half of run time.
CLIO, MI, UNITED STATES, October 29, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — PAWS Workholding, a Michigan builder of custom hydraulic workholding fixtures, has published a workholding ROI guide showing how production milling operations can add parts per shift by recovering non-cutting time. The guide, with a free calculator and worksheet, is available at pawsworkholding.com.
The guide starts from a finding in the company’s own analysis of production milling: feed time, the time a computer numerical control (CNC) machine is actually cutting, is on average only 40 to 50 percent of overall run time. It then walks through the six non-cutting costs that fill the rest of the cycle: load and unload, tool changes, probing and tool verification, rapid moves, part seating and operator attendance.
A worked example applies the formulas of the company’s free ROI calculator to illustrative inputs from that analysis. Holding 12 parts per cycle instead of 2 raises parts per shift from 570 to 719 on an 8-hour shift, about 26 percent, and cuts tool change time per shift from about 81 minutes to 17. Readers can run their own numbers in the calculator built into the guide or print the worksheet.
“Most shops chase seconds in the cut and leave minutes on the table at the door of the machine. This guide shows where those minutes go and what a fixture does about them,” said Thomas Kowal, CEO of PAWS Workholding.
The guide is written for the CEOs, general managers, operations managers and manufacturing engineers responsible for output on production mills. It closes with how long a fixture that does this takes: custom fixtures have a typical lead time of 8 to 10 weeks. Details on the company’s custom workholding fixtures are on its website.
